Overall usage of antipyretic drugs in public hospitals has increased to 10 times more, public urged to be careful with over-the-counter flu medicine

2nd March 2022 – (Hong Kong) William Chui, a registered pharmacist and the President of The Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Hong Kong said in a radio program today (2nd) that the supply of antipyretic drugs in public hospitals is sufficient, and the overall usage has increased by 7 to 10 times compared to usual. Chui pointed out that the two drugs currently used to treat COVID-19 infected patients are suitable for patients with mild to moderate symptoms who have not received vaccinations. However, patients must complete the 5-day course of treatment, otherwise there will be drug resistance, or the virus may mutate. It is believed that the authorities need to purchase at least 10,000 courses of new oral drugs.

Meanwhile, Chui pointed out that the current supply of antipyretic drugs in public hospitals is sufficient, and the overall usage is about 7 to 10 times higher than usual. He reminded the public to be careful with drugs, especially pregnant or breastfeeding women, it is best to consult a pharmacist first.

Regarding some members of the public rushing to buy over-the-counter flu medicines, he pointed out that flue medicines contain “paracetamol”, which can only reduce fever and pain, but not inflammation. While the “ibuprofen” component of painkillers can reduce inflammation, the drugs must be sold under the supervision of a pharmacist. He also does not recommend that people under the age of 16 take the 2 drugs at the same time for an extended period, but they can take them at the same time in the short term to reduce fever. If citizens can’t get the relevant medicines, they should drink more water to to relieve the symptoms.
